Oklahoma HVAC Help
Most Oklahoma air conditioning failures come down to six things: a tripped breaker, a clogged filter, a frozen evaporator coil, a failed run capacitor, a dead thermostat, or low refrigerant. Three of those you can check yourself in under ten minutes and fix for less than $30. The other three need a licensed tech. This page walks each one in order, cheapest first, so you know which situation you are in before you call anybody.
Start here: what is it actually doing?
- Running but not cooling — usually airflow or refrigerant. Check the filter and the outdoor coil first.
- Not turning on at all — breaker, thermostat batteries, condensate float switch, or the door safety switch on the air handler.
- Running constantly and never satisfying — undersized for the heat load, a leaking duct in the attic, or a failing capacitor.
- Ice on the copper lines — turn it off. Running a frozen system damages the compressor. Let it thaw before anything else.
- Loud outside, quiet inside — the fan motor or contactor. Do not open the disconnect yourself.
- Bills climbing with no change in use — most often duct leakage or a system past its service life.
The ten-minute checks worth doing first
- Filter. If you cannot see light through it, that is your problem or a large part of it. A $12 filter fixes a surprising number of “the AC is broken” calls.
- Breaker. Check both the indoor and outdoor breakers. An AC breaker that trips once is worth resetting. One that trips twice is an electrical fault — stop and call.
- Thermostat. Fresh batteries, set to COOL, set at least five degrees below room temperature.
- Outdoor unit. Cottonwood, grass clippings and Oklahoma dust pack condenser coils solid. Rinse from the inside out with a garden hose, power off.
- Condensate drain. A clogged drain trips the float switch and kills the whole system. Clearing it is a shop-vac job.
If all five check out and it still will not cool, you are past the DIY line. That is a real service call and we will say so rather than pretend otherwise.
What makes Oklahoma different
Sizing rules written for milder climates do not survive an Oklahoma August. A few things that shape repair decisions here specifically:
- Hail. Condenser coils take direct hits statewide. Flattened fins cut capacity long before the unit fails outright, and damage is often insurable.
- Humidity swings. A system that cools but leaves the house clammy is usually oversized, short-cycling before it can dehumidify.
- Attic ductwork. Most Oklahoma homes run ducts through attics that hit 140°F. Leaky returns up there are the single most common invisible efficiency loss.
- Gas versus electric heat. Availability varies sharply by city, and it changes what a replacement should cost.
- Housing eras. A 1960s slab ranch and a 2015 build have completely different failure patterns.
When it is worth calling
Call a licensed tech for refrigerant of any kind, anything behind the electrical disconnect, compressor or capacitor work, gas heat exchangers, and any burning smell. Refrigerant handling is EPA-regulated and gas work is not a place to experiment.
